Will there be a Syclone stirring it up in the upcoming GMC Canyon?

GM teased the press yesterday with a sneak peek at the upcoming Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon small trucks. GM stopped building small trucks back in 2012 leaving Toyota to dominate that market. Ford left the small truck market with the demise of its Ranger pickup, though globally both GM and Ford offer small trucks. GM only gave out this small snapshot to give a whiff of the upcoming baby trucks to hit the US market in 2014.

The guys over at the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! had Gayle Banks, TurboCharging genius and Mad Scientist, on their podcast. Jeff Glucker asked Mr. Banks about the GMC Syclone. After a long introduction, Banks explained how the Syclone came about. You can listen for yourself, but the short version is that GM wanted to build a truck that could do 175 mph! After a lot of churning and blowing up engines, Banks accomplished the goal and even exceeding it by hitting 199 mph and in a later attempt breaking 200 mph.

Given GM's prodigious engineering capabilities with respect to achieving speed and handling, perhaps we'll see a modern day version of the Syclone. GM could proudly park a new Syclone next to the Stingray and the V-Series Cadillacs and continue to build up a reputation as the American carmaker with genuine speed skills.

GM could do a lot of cool things with the Colorado/Canyon...but I wouldn't expect they will. Expect gasoline powered car engines in over-styled trucks that still wont be better than the 5+ year old Tacoma. Prove me wrong GM, Prove me wrong.

I hope they make a new Syclone as well as a 4-door Typhoon.

As for the rest of the Colorado and friends lineup, we need

base 1.8L 4-cylinder
2.5L 4-cylinder
A new aluminum version of the Atlas I6 preferred, or the High Feature V6 if they can't handle the awesomeness of an I6 re-revival

A turbo version of the 6-pot for the SyTy. a twin-turbo 4.2L could probably get 500 hp with not too much effort.

And finally, a 2L diesel I4 for business use and good fuel economy

Yeah I know there is no 4-door Typhoon, but maybe next time (as in the next-gen Colorado/Trailblazer et al) they CAN make one :p

FWIW, they almost did make a 40door Typhoon back then, and it was very close to production, and there were prototypes, but they scrapped it at the last minute.

OK Ok ok. That's fine I was just making sure you didn't think there used to be one.

If they did one now I bet they would, giving the Trailblazer SS.
